Turbine Lübbenau
Invited realization competition, 2020, Lübbenau
"Turbine Lübbenau - meeting point green center".
Urban design and integration into the surrounding open space
An independent neighborhood grouped around a green center is formulated,
which redefines the guiding principle "living and event in the park". An ensemble
of 6 buildings is grouped in a circle around a central open space. The circle
also stands as a symbol of community, as a new center in a heterogeneous
environment. On
the basis and zoning of an "ideal city", a northern residential area, a central
residential area, a central neighborhood park (functional area community) and a
public part of the event area Turbine will be merged into an overall
structure. The linear building structure and formation of a central area,
which in turn interlocks with the private outdoor areas, enable the implementation of
different
forms of living, in which people can live together across generations. High-quality
meeting spaces
enable an interplay of private and public togetherness. In the
the placement of the buildings and the open spaces, great importance was attached to
the preservation and
and integration of the existing tree population. The ensemble fits into the
surrounding park with its trees flowing through the property.
The architectural theme of the turbine, as a historical component of the 1950s years, will
be
further developed and interpreted in a contemporary way. A new ensemble is created
through
similarities and quotations in cubature, material and facade of the new components.
The turbine as a reclaimed place of community
The southern façade will be renovated in accordance with the preservation order and
contemporary solar control glass. The former rear side of the hall will be a
community area with linear functions (kiosk, bicycle workshop, washroom). As the
second face of the hall,
this protruding component acts as a “glowing joint” to the living area, its polycarbonate
facade
refers to simple, inexpensive materials from the 1950s years.
Two passageways connect the hall, the common area and the living area. The
central hall of the turbine, with its new, rounding terrace, continues to be the
the venue for a few major events held each year. At the same time
the lounge-café, which in normal operation is furnished within the quarter, becomes a
foyer and entrance
and entrée (party lounge). A continuous use of the hall building
in special cases as well as in normal operation is guaranteed.
Diverse open space types for community and privacy
The open spaces directly assigned to the residential buildings form the core of the
open space. The entrance areas in the east are designed as small-scale entrance
zones (reception area),
while the private gardens on the west side are protected from view with green pergolas.
All accesses are made usable as green residential alleys for the residents as a meeting
point,
the minimized degree of sealing of the surfaces is achieved via barrier-free pavement
strips (concrete),
lawn paving stones and gravel lawn. Plantable "green borders integrate the houses into
the open space.
The rainwater that can no longer seep into the surface is fed into the water area in the
communal garden.
The green roofs increase the degree of evaporation and the biological diversity.
The community garden, as the center of the complex, forms an "open" house
for all residents and completes the urban footprint of the complex to the ensemble.
Energy efficiency (energy concept)
The flat roofs will be extensively greened, solar thermal or photovoltaic systems
can be installed on all roofs without any problems, the roof surfaces of the two-story
components
are hidden from view from the apartments. The
compact design, the orientation of the opening surfaces towards the sun and the
energy supply through climate-neutral sources and, if necessary, connection to an
external
CHP, if necessary, make it possible to meet even higher KFW subsidy requirements,
right up to
to achieve the passive house standard.
