Just in time for the opening of documenta 15, our project for the renovation, redesign and linking of the Gustav Mahler Staircase (1964) with the core area of the former Federal Garden Show from 1955 was completed. Two design principles, Herrmann Mattern"s structural approach in the Rosenhang with the massive concrete staircase body flowing into the baroque Karlsaue, had to be linked. "Recycle & Reuse" was the innovative approach to achieve a positive carbon footprint. 1606 sqm of slabs were cleaned and reinstalled, new bands of contrasting concrete, a luminous handrail and new lighting complete the barrier-free upgrade of the ensemble.
